The artist has handed over the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which works to protect the UK's independent concert spaces.

He was given the prize on October 16 as his latest record the album was chosen as the outstanding release of the past year.

The musician has chosen to give the cash to the trust, in acknowledgment of the essential function small stages fulfilled in his early career.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the performances I performed around the area, and further afield, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These locations are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these locations have shut down – approximately one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by including a modest fee to their ticket costs, which benefits local stages.

Sam Fender also participated, raising over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to support 38 grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money helped spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to challenges arising from flooding, blazes and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and sound issues.

Some locations were granted financial assistance in upgrading facilities and sound and lighting systems that helped performers and concertgoers.

"The idea that revenue from concerts in big venues supports the local stages, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

Fender is among several artists to donate his Mercury Prize winnings to charitable organizations.

In Pulp received the prize in the year 1996 for their record their work, frontman Cocker declared that the group would donate their winnings to the non-profit War Child.

In 2002, musician she split her prize between multiple good causes, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"I also gave a grand to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked new equipment," the artist shared with outlets.

In recent years, they contributed their winnings to the community center that developed their group, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Also the 1994 recipients M People donated their prize to a MS organization after a close contact was identified with the illness.

"Winning was sufficient," stated vocalist the singer. "The cash was the cherry on top but we could do without the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

Last week, the MVT revealed it had protected a couple of local spots in south-east England, by placing them under community ownership.

The Joiners in the city and The Croft in that location were purchased under the public acquisition scheme, which is backed by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who acquire "stakes" in the venues.
