EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
