Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
