Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a thread holding it together to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Reports that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their initial five matches, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or imploding.

The Youngster's Unexpected Presence

One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this year. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there for another season. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He joined originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
